The Mandrarossa Contrada Wines come from 100% limestone soils

Launched to the market in April 2019, the news Contrada Wines, represent innovation and experimentationnand the values of the unique terroir they come from.

The wines come from two of Menfi’s Contrade, Bertolino Soprano and Miccina, described in two “rediscovered stories”.

Bertolino Soprano tells the story of the winemaker Santo, who, looking at the sunset over Pizzo Giuliana in Menfi, remembers his youth spent among the vine rows and his grandfather’s words, which he relives with love and emotions that his land has given back to him.

Terre del Sommacco is the story of wood burning in a bonfire at night, surrounded by a group of soldiers that followed Garibaldi among the ruins of an old farm. A boy passing by saw them and frightened he hid behind a sumac bush, the typical plant of the territory. However, he was curious and stayed there listening to their stories all night. This is a story that his family has been passing on for generations.

Vinification and organoleptic properties

Bertolino Soprano is produced using single variety Grillo grapes, grown in the same vineyard in the Bertolino Soprano Contrada and handpicked in August. The chalky soil makes the wine fresh and elegant, while the aging in large French oak un-toasted barrels make it soft, intense and persistent. It expresses the character of the terroir it comes from with its floral aromas, herbal and citrus notes and a pleasant freshness.

Terre del Sommacco is produced from single variety Nero d’Avola grapes harvested from two vineyards with chalky soils in the Miccina Contrada. The land is swept by sea breezes, which combined to the soil composition, give minerality, intense aromas and character to the wine. Aging in large French oak un-toasted barrels make the 2016 Terre del Sommacco Sicilia DOC Rosso a unique Nero d’Avola, with a marked minerality and a complex aroma. Fragrant and pleasantly fruity with notes of cherry, mulberry and violet; soft to the palate, fruity with delicate tannins and lively freshness.
