Wandering about Courtyards

A microcosm where the family life still takes place in its extraordinary and simple daily routine. A microcosm where the entire life of the family takes place in its simply daily routine; a quiet village with its stone-paved little streets lined by old and new houses; small churches, bell towers, and then the main square, where people meet in the shadow of the trees.

A few garden benches, the statue of the Unknown Soldier, the barber's shop still faithfully following the 60's fashion, delicious haberdashery shops filled with lace and ribbons, bakeries spreading baked bread smell in the air, small grocery stores, confectioner's shops loaded with cakes and sweet delicacies. And then the Saturday street market swarming with people looking to pick up all sorts of things; the clubs of the old town centre, the man with the megaphone announcing not-to-be-missed events for the community.

But the most characteristic and distinctive item of the local architecture is hidden away from all this. Designed from the beginning as the meeting place for all the outdoor daily activities of the people living in the houses all around: it is the courtyard. They open up down there, at the end of narrow alleys that border the buildings in every direction, they reflect the discreet humanity and habits of their dwellers, they are places that tell stories and express culture and traditions, just like the entire village.

Courtyards are ancient meeting places, microcosms where the family life still takes place today in its extraordinary and simple daily routine. All sorts of things take place in a courtyard, as it is a world in itself, a place apart, somehow protected and deeply loved by its inhabitants. It is an everlasting place that may never be destroyed, whether physically or emotionally, as it survives everything, including time.

It is a natural stage in the middle of the overlooking doors and windows of the small houses around, a place that takes us back to the time when families essentially lived a community life. When you enter a courtyard, you are welcomed by the smell of tomato sauce boiling on the stove and by the scent of basil leaves from the plant in a pot on the balcony; by the smell of clean sheets hanging to dry outside, by the music of a radio and the crystal-clear laughs of children: these are the most significant aspects of a charming world that lives protected from the main road.
