The grapes grown on these vineyardskissed by the sun are the symbol of the quality and personality of the wines that are obtained from them. Research and experimentation in the vineyard: due to the characteristics of its microclimate, the territory of Menfi is the ideal place for vine-growing. Ideal temperatures ensured throughout the year by the combination of hot scirocco winds blowing from Africa during the winter and a fresh marine breeze refreshing the air in the summer, plus a particularly intense light determined by the latitude of the island, are real vital lymph for the growth of this plant. In addition to this, we must consider the special morphological layout of the territory, which is characterized by numberless gentle hills offering a range of different slopes and altitudes. And finally, the different soil types, that vary "from palm to palm" - as we say here - offering sandy to clayey, calcareous to medium-textured, to slimy soil.
All this creates a number of small different terroirs where Mandrarossa has long been experimenting with different vine growing techniques, not only with autochthonous cultivars, but mainly with innovative ones that are absolutely new to the Sicilian wine-making scenario. So, side by side with the most traditional varieties like Chardonnay, Merlot, Nero d'Avola, Syrah, you will see Petit Verdot, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Alicante Bouschet vineyards being grown in Mandrarossa vineyards in Menfi, and often only in the island - they may be unknown to most people, but certainly found ideal conditions to grow her.
The purpose of our careful work has always been to obtain higher and higher quality wines with great personalities, to express the most authentic character of the unique and uncontaminated land that has generated them. That is how we found out that innovative varieties such as Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc prefers sandy soils, for example, while Alicante Bouschet grows better on clayey soils, Sauvignon Blanc on medium-texture soils, and Merlot on calcareous soils, and that each cultivar takes on extremely distinctive features from the specific territory that has generated it. The use of conservative pruning methods allows agronomists to preserve the health and longevity of the vineyard. The grapes grown on these vineyards kissed by the sun and nourished by these soils are the flag of our land and the symbol of the quality and personality of the wines that are obtained from them. But let's look at them in detail now. The grapes grown on these vineyards kissed by the sun and nourished by these soils are the symbol of the quality and personality of the wines that are obtained from them. Let's go into more details.
Viognier is a white wine grape originating from the Rhone Valley, It is grown in the north-western areas of the territory of Menfi, where soils are essentially calcareous and clayey, between 150 and 350 meters a.s.l. and exposed to south/south-east. Its produces a wine characterized by scents of peach, ripe apricot and honey, and with an excellent mineral balance. Viognier grapes originate the varietal white Mandrarossa Viognier wine; blended with Fiano and Chenin Blanc, it gives Santannella.
This traditional vine variety comes from the Avellino area, but thanks to the pedoclimatic characteristics of the Menfi area, it acclimated very well to this land, where soils are prevalently calcareous or clayey, located at altitudes ranging from 150 to 350 metres a.s.l. and exposed to south. The wine we obtain from these grapes has a pleasant and very aromatic scent with passion fruit as its most characteristic note, while its palate is very savoury and mineral. Fiano grapes give the varietal wine Mandrarossa Fiano, blended with Viognier and Chenin Blanc grapes, they give Santannella.
Almost absent from the Italian wine-making scenario. It was proved to be versatile in the Menfi area, in medium-texture soils tend to calcareous, lie at 250 metres a.s.l., exposed to south/south-east. It grows in this hot and dry climate to ripen into grapes that give wines with scents of ripe apple, honey, lemon and peach. Chenin Blanc grapes, blended with Fiano and Viognier varieties, give our wine Santannella.
Its ripens early in Menfi thanks to the microclimate. It is grown in vineyards at altitudes ranging from 80 and 150 metres a.s.l, with its range of calcareous, clayey and medium-texture soils. Its producers an elegant and savoury wine with aromas that recall green peppers, sage, mowed grass and citrus fruits. Whose grapes give the varietal white wine Urra di Mare.
This variety of coloured pulp grapes, particularly rich in anthocyanins. It is grown north of Menfi and particularly on sandy and medium-textured soils located between 150 and 250 metres a.s.l. exposed to south/south-east. In Menfi, these grapes ripen very early, which allows their primary aromas to be preserved and wines to be obtained with tangy scents of fresh fruits, in the context of a good level of acidity that makes them more long living and simultaneously savoury and pleasant to drink. The variety alone gives a varietal Alicante Bouschet wine, while its blend with Merlot and Nero d'Avola give the CavadiSerpe
Originating from the Bordeaux area in France, it is a rather late-ripening variety that found its ideal environment in Menfi, thanks to its Mediterranean climate and gentle marine breeze. It is mainly grown where soils are calcareous or sandy, positioned between 100 and 250 metres of altitude a.s.l., either flat or exposed to south. When completely ripe, it gives a very structured soft and velvety wine of great elegance. Petit Verdot alone give the varietal wine Timperosse.
This French variety, it found an ideal environment in west of Menfi, on sandy or medium-texture flat soils positioned between 90 and 150 metres a.s.l.
