Medium grape, ellipsoidal to oval, pruinose skin with a medium thickness and leathery, blue-color epidermis.
Sensory profile of the wine
The black grape variety that most represents our region produces wines with a ruby-red color, with a marked acidity, intense and full-bodied. The single variety wines are ideal for aging in casks, thanks to refined aromas and a good aging potential. The scents, based on the type of ripening, present notes that go from floral of violets to fruity of black cherries, to spices in its versions that are aged longer.
Mandrarossa wines produced from this variety
In the area of Menfi, Mandrarossa uses this variety of grapes to produce three single variety wines and one blend. The Nero d’Avola Costadune is a fresh and young wine aged for 8 months in steel tanks, with a fruity aroma and notes of black cherry, prune and red mulberries to the palate; the Cartagho, produced from the best selection of Nero d’Avola grapes, ages for 12 months in barriques, evolving into an intense wine to the palate, with hints of wild blackberries and marasca cherries; the Terre del Sommacco, Nero d’Avola from 100% chalky soils, ages for 11 months in a large barrel reaching the perfect balance between acidity and tannins, resulting in a harmonious wine; the Bonera is a memorable blend, the result of the mixture of the elegant smoky notes of the Cabernet Franc and the bold Character of the Nero d’Avola.
